Frequently Asked Questions
Bhai Phota is a Bengali festival that beautifully celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. It takes place two days after Kalipuja, on the day called Dwitia, which is why it's also known as Bhatridwitia. In some families, it's celebrated even earlier, on Prathama.
Traditionally, sisters will fast until the ceremony begins. Then, they will put a "phota," on their brother's forehead using sandalwood paste. While doing this, they'll shower him with paddy grains and grass shoots, called durba, and say prayers wishing him a long and happy life. Sisters also offer their brothers delicious sweets and other traditional homemade treats. Often, the celebration continues with a big, festive meal. As a sign of their love and promise to protect their sisters, brothers give them gifts.
There are many. I am noting the most famous one below-
Bhaier kopale dilam phonta;
Jomer duare porlo kanta;
Yamuna dyay jom ke phonta;
Ami di amar bhai ke phonta.
