Durga Puja Special Recipes - This is a tricky topic, even for me! The foods Bengalis traditionally cook and enjoy during Durga Puja are quite different from what other communities prepare during Navratri. So, if you're looking for Navratri recipes, this isn't the right place. This post is all about Bengali cuisine, featuring over 100 recipes - both common and unique - that are cooked during Durga Puja or can be enjoyed in a Bengali style during the festivities. That means we'll have both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, just like how Bengalis celebrate Duggapujo!

Debjani's Note

As I said, this write-up was a bit of a challenge for me too. I initially planned to select about 50 recipes from my blog. I even doubted I had that many suitable Durga Puja recipes already written! But here I am, with over 100 recipes, all readily available here at Debjanir Rannaghar, and all perfect for Durga Puja.

Enjoy this special Durga Puja feast, featuring delicious dishes for Shoshthi, Saptami, Ashtami, Nobomi, and Doshomi! I've included a section dedicated to traditional bhog recipes like Khichuri, Labra, Chutney, Payesh, Bhoger Mangsho, and Ilisher Jhol. Plus, find Panta Bhat and Kochu Shag prepared in both Ghoti and Bangal styles. Don't miss the special recipes for Bijaya Doshomi in their own section!

Dear readers, if you have any favorite Durga Puja recipes you'd like me to add, please let me know!

About the Durga Puja celebration at my home

I've probably written about Durga Puja hundreds of times, and I still enjoy revisiting those memories. That's the magic of it! Growing up in a typical middle-class Bengali household in Central Kolkata, my Puja celebrations were pretty standard. It always started with a trip to New Market with my parents to buy the latest clothes and shoes - the kind with little heels that Baba never approved of! We'd always make sure to grab biryani at Aminia on a non-vegetarian day, or kulfi and dahi vada at Rally's when we were eating vegetarian. Then, there were trips with Maa to Asha Dalia Saree shop near Bidhan Sarani to choose her beautiful saris. We'd also visit Gariahat and Shyambazar for bedsheets, curtains, and all sorts of things for the family, especially the kids - my cousins, and eventually, their children. Until I was about 15, I'd go pandal hopping with my parents. But after that, I got permission to explore the pandals with my friends, and that's when the real fun began!

My childhood was wonderful! During Durga Puja, certain foods were always present. On Saptami, we'd have Payesh and Bhetki fish - be it paturi or kalia or a simple jhal. Ashtami meant Khichuri, Labra, and other vegetarian dishes at home, although we were allowed to eat non-vegetarian food outside. Then came Nabami, the day for Mangsho Bhat at home! Dashami featured a grand feast. Unlike some families, we didn't cook Ilish on Dashami because I'm not Bangal. Instead, we had Kochu Shak, the Ghoti thing. In the evening, there was a huge spread of Ghughni, Nimki, Naru, Narkel Chapa, and so much more.

I still try to uphold these traditions at my home, following the customs I grew up with and cherishing the joy and completeness of Durga Puja.

Durga Puja Special Recipes

I'm trying to share a variety of recipes perfect for Durga Puja! I've included both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. Yes, we Bengalis enjoy vegetarian dishes too, alongside our love for non-vegetarian fare. I hope this selection of recipes makes it easy for you to plan your meals throughout the festival.
