About the Durga Puja celebration at my home
I've probably written about Durga Puja hundreds of times, and I still enjoy revisiting those memories. That's the magic of it! Growing up in a typical middle-class Bengali household in Central Kolkata, my Puja celebrations were pretty standard. It always started with a trip to New Market with my parents to buy the latest clothes and shoes - the kind with little heels that Baba never approved of! We'd always make sure to grab biryani at Aminia on a non-vegetarian day, or kulfi and dahi vada at Rally's when we were eating vegetarian. Then, there were trips with Maa to Asha Dalia Saree shop near Bidhan Sarani to choose her beautiful saris. We'd also visit Gariahat and Shyambazar for bedsheets, curtains, and all sorts of things for the family, especially the kids - my cousins, and eventually, their children. Until I was about 15, I'd go pandal hopping with my parents. But after that, I got permission to explore the pandals with my friends, and that's when the real fun began!
My childhood was wonderful! During Durga Puja, certain foods were always present. On Saptami, we'd have Payesh and Bhetki fish - be it paturi or kalia or a simple jhal. Ashtami meant Khichuri, Labra, and other vegetarian dishes at home, although we were allowed to eat non-vegetarian food outside. Then came Nabami, the day for Mangsho Bhat at home! Dashami featured a grand feast. Unlike some families, we didn't cook Ilish on Dashami because I'm not Bangal. Instead, we had Kochu Shak, the Ghoti thing. In the evening, there was a huge spread of Ghughni, Nimki, Naru, Narkel Chapa, and so much more.
I still try to uphold these traditions at my home, following the customs I grew up with and cherishing the joy and completeness of Durga Puja.
