Bacon has become a breakfast staple in our busy lives. I'm not a morning person, so we often end up eating bacon sandwiches. Our house-help, or my husband when she's off, makes them almost every other day. I taught them how to prepare these so I could sneak in an extra hour of sleep! They always find a way to include bacon in our breakfast. My job is mainly to keep the bacon stocked! Occasionally, I make Bacon Jam, which is a big hit with the whole family.

Homemade Bacon Jam

Whether you choose to spread it generously on toasted sourdough for a weekend brunch, swirl it into creamy scrambled eggs for a flavor explosion, elevate a simple burger to gourmet status, or simply savor it by the spoonful as a delightful side, bacon jam is undeniably versatile and incredibly comforting. Its rich, umami notes are guaranteed to satisfy any craving. This post, in fact, is dedicated to my absolute favorite spread: Bacon Jam! I usually make it in relatively small batches, typically enough to fill a couple of jars. My daughter has developed a serious fondness for enjoying it on her morning toast. However, I do try to limit her intake, not because of any bacon aversion, but because I use freshly brewed, strong coffee in the recipe to deepen the flavor!

The beauty of bacon jam lies in its adaptability. Bacon jam recipes are, in a sense, unique to each individual cook and their preferred flavor profile. Some cooks like to infuse their jam with the herbaceous aroma of fresh thyme, creating a more savory and aromatic experience. Others prefer to add a splash of bourbon, imparting a warm, boozy depth that complements the smoky bacon beautifully. And some, like myself, even incorporate freshly brewed coffee, adding a subtle bitterness and complexity that balances the sweetness perfectly. My personal favorite recipe always includes freshly brewed, strong coffee. It creates an incredibly nuanced and addictive flavor that I just can't resist. To further enhance the flavor profile and add a delightful zing, I also toss in a few thin strips of fresh ginger for an extra little kick. The ginger adds a warm spice and subtle heat that cuts through the richness of the bacon, making each bite a truly unforgettable experience.

Ingredients

  • 500 g Bacon I have used smoked Bacon
  • 2 Onion
  • 10 cloves Garlic
  • 1 inch Ginger optional
  • ⅓ cup Apple Cider Vinegar
  • ¼ cup Brown Sugar packed
  • ⅓ cup Maple Syrup optional
  • 1 Tsp. Black Pepper Powder
  • 1 Tsp. Salt
  • ¾ cup Freshly Brewed Coffee
  • 1 Tbsp. Unsalted Butter

Instructions

  • Chop Onion and garlic roughly cut julienne strips of Ginger.
  • Heat an iron wok and start cooking the bacon preferably in 2-3 batches. The Bacon will be cooked in own oil.
  • Once crisp, strain the bacon from the Pan and place over tissue paper to soak the fat.
  • Discard the fat from the Pan after keeping 2 Tbsp. of melted fat in reserve.
  • Heat the remaining fat along with butter and start frying the onion on medium flame.
  • Once caramelized, add chopped garlic and chopped Ginger and cook for one more minute.
  • Now add Maple Syrup, Brown Sugar, Black Pepper Powder, Salt and freshly brewed Coffee.
  • In between roughly chop the fried bacon and add.
  • Start cooking in slow flame upon covering the pan with a lid till the liquid absorbed completely.
  • It took me around 20 minutes to reach the perfect consistency of the Bacon Jam.
  • The end result will be thick and rich, blackish red Bacon Jam.
  • Use an airtight jar to store the Bacon Jam.
  • It can be stored in the refrigerator for around 3-4 weeks.
  • You can add bourbon for alcoholic version.

Notes

If Maple syrup is not available, replace it with 2 Tbsp. Brown Sugar.
