Debjani's Note -About the Kojagori Lokkhi Puja celebration at my home

Thinking about the homely Kojagari Lakshmi Puja celebrations in Bengali homes right after Durga Puja - Kojagori Lokkhi pujo as we refer- always brings back so many memories. In our old Calcutta residence, Mummum, my aunt, used to lead the Lakshmi Puja preparations before she passed away. I remember being told that she brought her own Lakshmi Haari, a special pot for the goddess, to her new home after getting married. We always used that very Haari for our family's Lakshmi Puja. While most Bengali families worship Lakshmi using a Lokkhir Sora, a painted clay plate, we always used the Lokkhir Haari.

When it comes to food, my parents' house never offered rice as part of the Maa Lokki'r bhog. Instead, the main dishes were Luchi, Chanar Dalna, Alur Dum, Panch Bhaja, Tomato Amsotto Khejur Chutney, Semui-er Payesh, and Narkel Naru, or similar sweets made with coconut.

Now, in my own home, I prepare rice bhog for Lokkhi Thakur. So, the offerings usually include Bhoger Khichuri or Bhuni Khichuri, Mishti Pulao, Panch Bhaja,  Sada Aloor Dum, Paneer er Torkari or Chanar Dalna, Plastic Chutney, Chaler Payesh, and of course, Narkel Naru and Narkel Chapa.

Since "Lokkhi Pujo" dishes aren't really set in stone, picking what to make can be tricky. I've gathered some recipes to help you choose from my Kojagari Lakshmi Puja Special Recipes.

Dear readers, if you have any favorite Kojagori Lokkhi Puja special recipes you'd like me to add, please let me know!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the significance of Kojagari Laxmi Puja?

Kojagari Lakshmi Puja is a special celebration in Eastern India where people worship the Goddess Lakshmi on Sharad Purnima. It's believed that on this night, Goddess Lakshmi visits homes to see who is awake. If she finds someone awake, she blesses them. The word "Kojagari" actually means "who is awake?" highlighting the tradition of staying up all night to welcome the goddess- Ke Jaago Re!

How do they celebrate Kojagari Lakshmi Puja in Bengal?

In Bengal, the celebration often involves worshipping a decorated pot called "Lokkhir Sora." Some families also worship "Lokkhir Haari." The puja takes place in the evening, and we keep a diya, or small lamp, lit throughout the night. This is done to welcome Lakshmi and answer her call, "Ke Jaago re?" which means, "Who is awake?". And hence, the name Kojagari.

What is cooked as part of the Kojagori Lokkhi Pujor Bhog?

For the special meal offered to Maa Lakshmi on Kojagari Purnima, known as "Lokkhi Pujor Bhog," Bengali families typically prepare a vegetarian feast. However, some families have a tradition of offering fish to the goddess. Common dishes in the bhog include Khichuri, Labra, Chanar Dalna, Payesh, Panch Bhaja, Narkel Naru, Narkel Chapa, Murir Moya, along with various fruits.
