Crispy Air Fryer Bengali Aloo Beans Bhaja Recipe - Potato and Beans Fry
- Total Time: 35 minutes
- Yield: 5 People 1x
- Diet: Vegan
Description
This simple Bengali Aloo Beans Bhaja is made with fresh green beans and potatoes, which are coated in a blend of aromatic spices and then air-fried to perfection. The result is a crispy and delicious dish that you can serve as part of a comforting Bengali meal.
Ingredients
- 6 medium-sized potatoes
- 200g green beans
- 1 Tsp. salt
- 1 Tsp. turmeric powder
- 1 Tsp. red chili powder
- 1 Tbsp. vegetable oil (optional)
Instructions
- Thoroughly rinse 6 medium-sized potatoes .
- Rinse 200g of green beans as well.
- Peel the potatoes and cut them into medium-thin strips.
- Remove the ends of each french bean and lice the beans into strips, preferably in a slight rhombus shape.
- Once again, rinse the sliced vegetables.
- Now lace the beans and potatoes in a bowl.
- Mix in one teaspoon of salt, one teaspoon of turmeric powder, and one teaspoon of red chili powder.
- After mixing, add one tablespoon of your preferred vegetable oil.
- If you are using an air fryer like I did in this recipe, you can omit the oil entirely.
- Transfer the vegetables to the air fryer basket.
- Here's a trick I'd like to share: cover the air fryer pan with a piece of aluminum foil before transferring the veggies. This way it will be easy to clean the air fryer basket after using it.
- Proceed to air fry the vegetables for a total of 30 minutes at 180 degrees Celsius (around 350- 356 F).
- To fry the aloo beans bhaja perfectly mix in with a fork after 15 minutes of air frying and complete the remaining 15 minutes.
- If necessary, continue air frying the vegetables for an additional 10-15 minutes at 180 degrees celsius.
- The greatest advantage of using an air fryer is that you can step away and let it do its job without the need to stir or constantly monitor.
- Once finished, transfer the fried potatoes and beans to a bowl and remove the aluminum foil.
- The air fryer pan requires only a simple wash as nothing sticks to it.
Notes
- To remove excess moisture while marinating the veggies, I use a perforated bowl.
- I personally use just one tablespoon oil while making the beans aloo bhaja in an air-frier. I must mention that if you were to shallow-fry this amount of potatoes and beans in a regular pan, it would require at least four to six tablespoons of oil. However, by using an air fryer, we can avoid this.

Substitutions and variations
Although I prefer unflavored vegetable oil when making the beans aloo bhaja, you can for sure use mustard oil for an added level of pungency. You can skip the use of oil completely when making the traditional aloo bhaja in an airfryer. Feel free to substitute french beans with borboti or phali, along with potatoes. For the spices, I personally prefer a simple mix of salt, turmeric, and red chili powder. However, if you prefer an extra kick, use some cumin powder and mango powder aka aamchur.
Top tip
Cover the air fryer basket with a piece of aluminum foil or place a silicon basket before transferring the veggies. This way it will be easy to clean the air fryer basket after using it. You just need to replace the aluminum foil or just need to wash the silicon basket. The air-fryer basket will not be messy at all.
FAQ
Absolutely not! I often use a single tablespoon of oil, which works well while making Bengali bhaja in an air fryer. If you're making a traditional Bengali bhaja like aloo bhaja that typically requires 7-8 tablespoons of oil, you can easily prepare it in an air fryer with just a tablespoon. Alternatively, you can completely omit the oil altogether.
