“Chalo let’s go! Our next destination is Mohammed Ali Park!”
“But Dada I am having problem with the new pumps and I have swelling too!” the twelve years old replied to her cousin brother.
“I knew it! You are always a spoilsport! I told you to not to opt for the new shoes but look at you; you just have decided to not listen to me! Now what we are going to do? We are at College Square and as per the plan, we will be having the ice cream and Bhel puri once we are at Mohammed Ali Park! Are you sure tha t you won’t be able to go there at all! but what about your pocket money! You have twenty rupees and we have to utilize it!” the big brother replied without any pause!
“Mommmaaaaa Mommaaaa can I have ice cream! There’s one there in the Fridge; I saw it… momma!”
With this noise, I jerked and returned to my present from 20 years back and found Pasta is asking for some ice cream and why not! After all, it is Durga Puja and my little lady deserves some ice cream for sure before going to the pandal! Now coming to the conversation above, growing up in a north Calcutta household with a big fat family and another biggy at mom’s side was something I always cherished for. Our childhood was restricted to a pocket money of twenty rupees with new dresses from New Market and new pumps which used to bother us like hell with the swelling! Hopping to the nearby pandals with family initially and then with friends was always amazing followed by having our regular favorites; Phuckha, Aloo Kabli, Roll, Bhel Puri and Ice Cream! So for me it was always the no-nonsense two-in-one. It is not that we had vast options to chose for while the truth is at that time we had limited options when it came to ice cream; Vanilla, two in one, chocolate and maximum butterscotch but we used to be happy with that! After all, we were the 80s kid and we were told to be satisfied with the limitations and now I am here dealing regularly with 3 years something 2016 kid who knows what she wanted and even what kind of flavor of ice cream she wanted! Kids today are not at all limited with the choices but yes if tackled properly they cherish the traditional Flavours as well.
Coming to the tradition\ part, which indeed justified today, while we are celebrating Durga Pujo I decided to try a different flavor of ice-cream for her with a touch of tradition and likeliness for sure. I have given her some Nolen Gur Ice Cream which Mother Dairy is recently come up with. Nolen Gur or Date Palm Jaggery is something Bengalis and even others who are aware of the awesome taste of it cherish for and Mother Dairy’s recent addition is loaded with the flavor of the seasonal delicacy. The Nolen Gur ice Cream by Mother Dairy is available in 2 sizes, a 90 ml cup for INR 20 and 750 ml tub for INR 150 which I found quite decently priced. Easily available at nearby markets or departmental stores this ice cream is worth trying for at least that is what my daughter told me!
Do try the Nolen Gur Ice Cream by Mother dairy this Puja and let me know whether Pasta is right or she is actually right with her recent addiction for the Nolen Gur Ice Cream!
