Bengali Ilish Shukto Recipe

Bengali Ilish Shukto aka Shukto cooked with Hilsa fish is a quintessential Bengali delicacy from Bangladesh.

Step 1

Marinate Hilsa fish chunks aka ilish mach with salt and  turmeric powder

Step 2

– Shallow fry fish chunks in mustard oil

Step 3

Cut  and fry the veggies into long strips after peeling the skin (potato, plantain, sweet potato, drumstick) and fry; do not peel the skin of eggplant.

Step 4

1. Temper remaining oil with 2 bay leaves, whole 5 spices aka Panch Foron and Radhuni.

Step 5

Add ginger paste and poppyseed paste aka posto bata

Step 6

Add Salt and Sugar and powdered five spices

Add milk and 3 cups of water and bring it to boil and then add veggies to cook

Step 7

Once veggies are done, add fried ilish mach and cook for 5 minutes. Add ghee at the end

Step 8

serve ilish shukto with steamed rice
