Narkel Diye Cholar Dal aka split Bengal Gram with coconut or Bengali Cholar Dal is a quintessential Bengali no onion no garlic Dal that we serve with Luchi or Porota.
Take 150g Bengal gram along with half of the Turmeric Powder and ½ Tsp. of salt in a pressure cooker and and cook till 4 whistles come out.
In a pan heat pan heat the Mustard Oil and fry 15 cashew, a5 raisin and 1/4 cup chopped coconut
In the remaining oil add 1/2 Tbsp. ghee and Temper the oil-ghee with Dry Red Chili, Bay Leaf, Cinnamon Stick, Black Cardamom, Green Cardamom and Cumin Seed.
To the mixture add 1 Tsp. asafoetida and 1 Tbsp. Ginger paste as well
Add 1/2 Tsp. turmeric powder, 1/2 Tsp. red chili powder, ½ Tsp. cumin powder, ½ tsp. Garam masala powder and 1 Tsp. sugar and mix thoroughly.
Now add cooked dal and start cooking on slow flame for 10 minutes.
Now add fried coconut, cashew nut, and Raisins. You may keep a little for garnishing.
Add Ghee, Garam Masala and roasted cumin powder for added flavor. Serve this No onion no garlic Bengali Cholar Dal with Roti/ Poori/ Paratha or Luchi
