Is A non-vegetarian meant for reviewing strictly vegetarian food! Well my answer is yes; after all, that person can tell you how it is to sample some really tasty vegetarian food without compromising his/ her preference over non-veg. At the end, food is about the taste but not the ingredients! On this note, let me share my experience of sampling food ( note vegetarian) at Kuaizi n Kadai, a family fine dine at Alipore area in the city of Joy. I visited them last week along with a blogger friend of mine and given she was a bit late reaching there I started discussing with the MD of the restaurant Nitish Saraf who himself is a foodie and chef and knows about the intricate details like what was the reason behind opening a vegeterian restaurant in Kolkata. First thing I asked Nitish was the meaning of the name and what I found is Kuaizi stands for chopsticks and Kadai does not require any introduction to the Indians. The name stands for both Indo and foreign cuisines.
Coming to the restaurant, it is a typical family dine as I already mentioned with moderate interior and obviously friendly staffs. I found they have the meaning of basic ingredients mentioned in their menu which people who are not much aware of the English names can relate for.
Let me now start with the details of the food we sampled upon Nitish’s suggestion. The meal started with two refreshing Mocktails Cosmo Crasia and Mumbai style Kala Khatta. For me Kala Khatta was the preferred given I prefer tangy drinks. As they are not in hard liquor; they have critically prepared their Mocktail menu which I found quite good.
We were served with two types of soup; a tomato based Soup, Zupa de Olata which was tangy and spicy and served with corn chips. Next one was a Thai flavored Soup Tom Kha Phak which I found awesome! Perfectly cooked veggies and a subtle taste of coconut milk; one should taste Tom Kha Phak in Kuaizi n Kadai for sure.
Though we have tried almost each type of food there but starters are sure shot winner! To be very frank I was not expecting much verity in the starters and I was amazed to sample their international range of starters along with the typical traditional Indian dishes. First thing we were served was Lasooni Paneer Tikka which Nitish told is their signature dish and got mentioned in many reputed columns. It was worth trying the tikka filled with a mixture of Lehsoon and the softness of Paneer was mind-blowing. The next dish served was Corn and Spinach Wanton what I found moderately well. The special mention is obviously the Flat Bread Pizza where they converted Nan into a Pizza. This was one of their best dishes indeed. I must say the starters are worth trying.
Our main course started with Mushroom and Cheese Nan and Tandoori Pudina Lachcha Paratha along with Veg Kebab Masala. I found that a plate of Veg Kebab Masala can easily be served to at least 3-4 people. It was an amalgamation of a white nut based gravy and a red gravy; both were having veg kebabs.
As part of Chinese food we were served with Veg Hong Kong Noodles and Pak Choi with exotic Greens. Both the dishes were decent to have though not as good as the starters.
The spread ended with Triple Layered Chocolate Biscotti where two flavors of Ice Cream amalgamated with wafers and Brownie and quoted with hot chocolate sauce and it was a pleasure to taste the dish with perfectly baked brownies with the crunchiness of wafer.
I found the restaurant quite impressive with their range of menu and especially in the Alipore area where we don’t have much option for vegetarian food and the best part is Kuaizi n Kadai is available with Jain alteration for almost 80% of their menu as confirmed by them. In a city like Kolkata, where we actually have good percentage of vegetarians but with lesser dine option; Kuaizi n Kadai is obviously a must try that’s what this non-vegetarian foodie who loves her portion of vegetarian food as well feels.
Disclaimer: Debjani Was invited by Kuaizi n Kadai to sample the spread there and the review is written upon her preferences without bias.
